Hey everyone, i have been working on my argumentative essay and have found it difficult because my topic does not stem from my analytical essay. However working on the mind maps definitely helped to organize my collective thoughts into a visual outline, which i find is a better organizing tool for me that it might be for others. How is everyone else coming along with their papers?

I also had my meeting with Tanya about my second draft. I found the comments to be very helpful. I think as long as we construct an argument that follows the spiral we have worked with and answer the questions that Tanya poses in our drafts, we should all be able to do well on this paper. How did everyone else feel about the comments that were given on our second drafts? Are you going to have to do a complete reconstruction or just some minor touch-ups?

Today in class we discussed the Friends scenes we watched on Monday and how they relate to the story A Boy’s Life.  We were broken up into three groups to discuss the relation. We discussed how it Ross and the killers were related and Sandy and the victim Matthew Sheppard were related. We discussed how in both stories it was Sandy or Matthew being gay or sensitive, but Ross or the killers being straight and masculine. An amazingly ironic point was the Ross was supposed to be acting like a masculine cowboy, but on the other hand cowboys weren’t to masculine in Brokeback Mountain.

I also have my mind map finished and am working on my first draft for the sustained research argument essay. I changed my research argument question from my analysis essay a little bit because it was hard to come up with a argument from it. My question is “Has the unfavorable war in Iraq made the US Marine Corps increase effort in recruitment for African Americans, women, other minorities, and immigrants over the last couple of years?” Can you tell me what you think of my question and how I can improve it?

I also initially thought that the scenes were just comedic, but after the in depth discussion there was a relation that was similar to the A Boy’s Life story. I have seen the show ‘Friends’ a few times and thought it was ironic how usually Ross’ character is the sensitive one, but he tried to be masculine in this episode. Ross would be the killers in the story and the male nanny would Matthew Sheppard. AT the end of the episode after trying to be so masculine, Ross turned into what Sandy was supposed to be a “wussy.”

I like your topic and it interesting. I don’t think Obama could be considered as the anti-Christ, but I don’t think it matters very much because he turned out to be elected President of the United States last night.

Honestly, when I finished writing out mind map and looked at it, I was impressed with how it outlines you idea, but I didn’t feel it really helped me or was worth my time. My mind map was pretty big when I finally finished, but it was sloppy and ideas were kind of everywhere which I guess is my fault that it didn’t really helped me. My original analysis essay was difficult for me to write an argument essay about as well, so I changed my topic too. I like your research inquiry question because it is something a lot of people can relate to.

Today in class, we watched a few scenes from the tv show ‘Friends’. The espisode was about how Ross and Rachel wanted to get a nanny (Sandy) for their new-born. These few scenes were funny, but after dicussing a bit about the scenes, the scenes were seem to have connected to the Matthew Stepard shooting. The main idea of the story and the scenes are about the idea of ‘Wussitude’.

In the ’Friends’ scene Sandy is describe as: flambouyant, emotinal, sensative, intellegant, college student, graduate, engaged, ‘male’ nanny, child like, and devoted. Also in the scene Sandy wanted to know why he was being let go.
Racheal is described as: use humor to lighten the mood, compares Ross to the cowbay culture, defense Sandy, bonds with sandy. Also Racheal tells the baby (Emma) that she is going to grow up to be like her daddy (Ross), but when she is sayign this Ross is crying on sandy’s shoulder
Ross is described as: A typical male–> strong, showing no emotion, warrior, etc., jugmental, defensive, also if looks like Sandy is the mirror image of Ross at a young age, and Ross breaks down to Sandy when Ross talks about his relationship with his dad.

Overall, these scenes that were shown in class were very funny. But I like how something so serious like the Matthew Shepard killing could be made into a comedy. But not many people watching that show won’t of realized what the main idea behind that scene.

For my agrumentative paper I am discussing about Obama and him being the anti-christ. If I could of paste my mind map, it would be a lot easier to read then, but i am going to write down the main map, hope u can understand it

In class on Friday we learned about mind maps. Being able to start with a main topic and create branches from that topic. Mind maps can be used as an outline that works in a more visual manner. I feel that the use of a visual aid is more effective that that of a standard black and white outline.

My question is “How do the NFL commercials influence women to become more interested in the sport?”. I have started making my mind map and found that i have quite a bit of information to work with. I had to choose a different topic to write about, because my analysis essay was about a specific painting and finding any type of argument to focus on was impossible. I’m going to focus on a specific commercial, give a brief description and use connections from that particular commercial to base my argument, while reflecting on others to support my claims. I’m going to use information about football about why it was initially created as a sport for men and over the years the NFL advising committee has focused more and more on women in their advertisements.

I figured that this topic would be something easy for me to write about since i have had a passion for football since i have been a kid. Has anyone else started their mind maps? What have you found by creating yours? Any ideas of how i can improve my research, or any other areas i can write about?

In Wednesday’s class, we had a library presentation for finding sources through library.syr.edu for our argumentative paper and how to research sources. Before class, we were supposed to have a revised research inquiry question and email it to Ms. Rodrigue. She tweaked my question a little bit. “How have the most recent US Marine Corp recruitment commercials shaped
how viewers think about what’s happening in the war, and the role of the military in the war?”

So, during class the librarian took us to a computer and showed us where to find articles from databases like Proquest and Wilson databases. I found Proquest helpful and found a couple of articles relating to my topic of US Marine Corp recruitment through television commercials. He also gave us a couple of documents that could help us find articles more easily.

I like your question Andrew, but I also agree that the questions are too vague and need to be more specific. The second question, “and Is Barrack Obama, the anti-christ, fact or fiction?.” is a little too complicated for the reader to comprehend. I like the two questions you found first from the Anti-Christ Obama. The first question and the second question are topics , “Could Obama’s lack of experience cost him the election? According to Obama’s claims, would electing McCain be the same as giving President Bush a third term in office?“ that reader’s even who aren’t very political and relate to and have an opinion on.

I believe that the obama topic is a great thing to explore. i would like to do my research on the energy options the world has once the current energy supply we have right depletes. i would like to talk about this because it is an important topic that everyone has to be involved in now or in the near future, there are many different areas of this topic to explore what do you think i should narrow this down to?

In monday’s class, we talked about our arguementative paper and how to reseach material for our paper. For homework we had to read a few segments in the Thompson Reader and Writing Analytically to help us with a research paper. The Thompson Reader discussed how to search on-line, putting together a research paper and defining commone knowledge. If you want to understand what each part is, just read the book then. In the writing anayltically book, this book discussed how to write and look up material for research paper.

Also, in monday’s class we brought in our questions for our paper. My community buddy Dave looked at my question and said that the question was not specific enough for the reader to understand. My questions were, “Can Obama be our savior, the answer to all of our prayers, who supports him? and Is Barrack Obama, the anti-christ, fact or fiction?.” The whole point of this question is based on how the people view Obama as a savior to our society. After talking to the professor, she helped me by looking at Anti-Christ Obama. I have found some information on this new topic and came up woth a couple of questions. Let me know what you think of them or give me different ideas for questions.

Could Obama’s lack of experince cost him the election?

According to Obama’s claims, would electing McCain be the same as giving President Bush a third term in office?

Could the christian community believe that Obama can be the anti-christ?
